SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate Public Health Committee, chaired by Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) will hold a subject matter hearing on the Illinois State Police’s backlog of DNA processing in murder cases.

“Families are justifiably tired of waiting for answers,” said Van Pelt. “We need to get to the root of the backlogs so that they can be fixed. ASAP.”

Van Pelt held a hearing on the matter last March after an ABC7 I-Team investigation revealed that the Illinois Forensic Science Lab was still analyzing DNA from more than 750 Chicago murder cases from the last three years.

Since then, the number of cases has decreased by 10 percent, and a task force has been established by Governor Pritzker to help address the issue. The task force is set to publish a report on its findings by this summer.

The committee will hear updates about the backlog.
